Tip # 78, shown below, reads as follows:

Look at the everyday world for inspiration: The idea of staying grounded and connected to the world of the everyday continually infuses the work of Scott Santoro and Worksight. Through the use of the plumbing metaphor, Santoro infuses his work with a practicality and simplicity of language that belies some of the pretentious conceit that the profession of design sometimes exhibits. "My father directs the flow of water. I direct the flow of information. There's a basic similarity between what we both do for a living."

Santoro took creative writing classes to help develop his observation skills. One example of the result is a short story he wrote about a backyard clothesline viewed from one of the irregularly shaped windows at the Whitney Museum of Art. Santoro's observations reflect his intense, daily engagement with the world of the everyday, and the fact that looking carefully at your surroundings can have a significant effect on your art. Letting in the seemingly unimportant and ephemeral can lead to inspiring observations and creative insights into the work of design.
